Exceedingly Slick
This is, without doubt, the highest quality and most thoughtfully designed piece of memorabilia I have ever owned. Not that I own much memorabilia, but I think it'll be hard to beat. If I had to be super-critical, I'd say that the mechanism that raises the platform inside the box is a little bit wobbly, but that is an incredibly minor criticism compared to everything that the Wand Company got right. Let's start with the base. As mentioned, when you open the lid, a simple mechanism raises the ball inside so that it is fully visible for display and easy to extract without knocking the sides of the lid or box. This also keeps the box nice and small. There's also a light display, and you can use a touch-sensitive panel hidden in the name plaque to customise the colour. The ball rests on a soft pad inside to prevent scratches and the lights reflect off the lower surface dramatically. The ball itself is metal-shelled with a plastic dividing line and button, and has a very satisfying heft. Naturally you shouldn't throw it as it will be damaged, but it feels authentically as if you could. The light displays affect only the button in the middle, but are subtly non-linear. I particularly like the way that it slowly lights up as you reach for it, then bursts to full (and considerable) brightness at a touch. The 'catch sequence' is also cutely authentic to the games. But the things I appreciated the most were these: firstly, there is no visible branding on the outside of the ball's shell - nothing to break up its outline or make it look less authentic as with so many plastic toys - it looks exactly like a pokéball should. The second is how they've hidden the batteries on the ball in order to maintain that seamless appeal. I won't spoil it for you, but it's an absolute joy. So all in all, would thoroughly recommend. BTW, the display ring is hidden in the box's battery compartment.
