The Suicide Squad: Trailer Breakdown – Meet James Gunn’s New Squad

The first trailer for director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has finally been unleashed and it is as wild as we could have hoped for.

Having been given rein on DC Comics’ popular gang of villains, the Guardians Of The Galaxy director is presenting us with a new take on the squad that looks like it will be an absolute blast.

After 2016’s original movie Suicide Squad caused disappointment, all eyes are on Gunn’s ‘soft reboot’ which features plenty of new antiheroes mixed in with a couple of returning fan favourites from before.

The trailer gave us our first proper look at the newly assembled squad, set to the track of Steely Dan’s Dirty Work which immediately tells us that they aren’t going to play nice.

Driven by chaotic energy, there’s a lot going on in the teaser from a hell of a lot of violence to a giant starfish. And yes, you did read that last part right.

Okay, enough chat, let’s break it all down.

All Aboard The Suicide Squad Bus

Warner Bros. Pictures

The opening of the trailer sees the gang assembled on a rather battered looking bus, introducing us to several new squad members.

Idris Elba’s skilled assassin Bloodsport is handing out weapons and teasing John Cena’s anti-hero Peacemaker who is sporting his trademark helmet.

Joining the pair on the bus is Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag returning from the 2016 movie, Peter Capaldi’s intriguing new addition Thinker, the king himself King Shark (voiced by none other than Sylvester Stallone), and David Dastmalchian’s supervillain Polka-Dot Man.

They are clearly on a mission overseen by Viola Davis’ director Amanda Waller, also returning from the original film, with the fact they are wearing casual clothes instead of their usual comic book costumes suggesting that they are undercover.

No Damsel In Distress

Warner Bros. Pictures

It’s then revealed that their mission is to rescue Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn who has been captured and held in some kind of fortress.

Whilst some of the team are unhappy with their goal, Bloodsport and Flag insist they go to get Harley, but it turns out she doesn’t need rescuing having escaped all by herself.

It appears to have been a messy escape with Harley covered in what looks to be blood, grasping onto a huge spear.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Crucially whilst Waller is overseeing this mission, a monitor nearby the director shows CCTV footage from inside another vehicle which holds other squad members: Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, Nathan Fillion’s TDK, Michael Rooker’s Savant, Flula Borg’s Javelin and others.

It appears then that two missions are running concurrently each with an assembled squad. We imagine these two teams will unite at the end to face a greater threat though.

Suicide Squad… Assemble

Warner Bros. Pictures

We then cut to a montage which introduces us to other new members, all of whom are sporting orange prison jumpsuits in the confines of a high-security jail.

Firstly we meet hacker Savant, Pete Davidson’s Blackguard (a comic villain whose own stupidity is his downfall), and Sean Gunn’s Weasal – a character we will all probably soon be obsessed with.

As we see Savant receive an injection, the narration reminds us that as per the last movie, each squad member is given 10 years off their sentence if they join the team and are successful on their mission.

But an explosive is also implanted into their necks allowing Waller to blow up a member if they defy the rules.

Meet More Team Members

Warner Bros. Pictures

A shot greeting us with the brilliant words “from the horribly beautiful mind of James Gunn” also introduces us to a couple more members of the squad.

In the line-up is Mayling Ng’s alien warlord Mongal, Flula Borg’s supervillain Javelin, Jai Courtney’s returning Captain Boomerang and Nathan Fillion’s superhuman TDK.

TDK actually has the ability to regrow his limbs – something we are sure will come in handy.

Off-The-Wall Action

Warner Bros. Pictures

We then get a glimpse at some of the action to expect from the movie, as Harley wields a massive bazooka in a jungle battle – most likely the fictional DC island of Corto Maltese.

King Shark is also causing havoc during this battle, eating a man head first saying “nom, nom”. Yes, this trailer really is that wild.

Debrief

Warner Bros. Pictures

We then see Waller briefing several members of the team: Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2 (played by Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man, King Shark and Peacemaker.

This is where Gunn shows off his comedic chops whilst also emphasising this film will definitely be R-rated, with Bloodsport having a particularly foul-mouth.

Elba groaning “oh for f*ck’s sake” is most definitely a mood though.

Doctor Who?

Warner Bros. Pictures

Here we get introduced to Peter Capaldi’s Thinker, a villain known for his genius-level intellect, inventing skills, and for possessing telekinetic and mind control abilities.

Clearly untrustworthy, the squad interrogates him as Thinker appears to have inside information about their mission.

More Action And A Bag Of Dicks

Warner Bros. Pictures

In the next part of the trailer a lot is going on. Firstly we see the military assemble, most likely being the army of actor Juan Diego Botto’s Silvio Luna (the dictator of Corto Maltese).

Bloodsport is seen leading the team on a mission, also once again teasing Peacemaker telling him “you should eat a big bag of dicks”.

Cena’s Peacemaker has the perfect silly response though stating that he if an entire beach was covered in dicks, he could eat every single one of them. Well, Gunn did promise us this film would be bonkers!

Warner Bros. Pictures

A bunch of action shots are then thrown at us including a nice one of Harley and other squad members leaping out of a building. Amidst these you can spot Alice Braga’s Sol Soria, leader of a resistance movement on Corto Maltese.

Bloodsport has clearly had enough of Waller going to attack her with a pen, whilst King Shark shows off his huge strength tearing a man into two. It’s both gross and awesome all at the same time.

A helicopter also crashes in style, whilst Harley is given another moment to shine taking down a bunch of military goons with flowers exploding behind her. Go Harley!

A Quiet Moment

Warner Bros. Pictures

After all of that chaos, we are treated to a quiet moment where Bloodsport promises Ratcatcher 2 he will get her out of the mission alive.

The two clearly have a connection, and the trailer hints that Ratcatcher 2 will be both the film and the squad’s secret weapon as she turns it around on Bloodsport replying: “I’m going to get you out of here.”

STARRO!!!

Warner Bros. Pictures

In a moment that no one saw coming, The Suicide Squad trailer really takes it up another notch delivering a final tease that is completely mad, but something we are really here for.

The big reveal is the arrival of the squad’s villain causing absolute carnage – a giant starfish “freaking kaiju” named Starro. Yes, they really did just introduce Starro to the big screen.

In the comics Starro has had quite the career being everything from a villain to the Justice League and a sidekick to Batman. It’s clear though in The Suicide Squad Starro will star as the antagonist, maybe an experiment by Silvio Luna gone wrong?

All we have to say to conclude is sign us the hell up!

The Suicide Squad will be released on 6th August.
