The PlayStation presentation was the grand finale of the second day of the E3 conference led by predominantly third party titles with exclusive PlayStation content, starting at 02:00 AM GMT on Tuesday morning. Here is a quick round-up of everything that was announced at the PlayStation E3 conference.
We wanted it so badly it was hard to believe we were actually being shown this at first – updated footage of the ever elusive The Last Guardian! PlayStation finally confirmed that the game is still in production and, to everyone’s surprise, for the PS4. Unfortunately there is no official release date as of yet. The beautifully melancholic story of this game is said to follow a boy who is trying to escape from a ruined fortress, and his developing friendship with a giant griffin-like creature.
Next up was a new game reveal from Guerilla Games, their first foray outside of the straight shooter genre. Horizon: Zero Dawn appears to be a strange but beautiful mix of tribal versus mecha. We saw a post-apocalyptic open world full of futuristic mechanized beasts just waiting for be hunted (or avoided) by the main protagonist called Aloy. The release date is currently unknown for Horizon: Zero Dawn.
PlayStation also welcomed back the deadly Agent 47, confirming a new Hitman release. The world-reveal video did not feature gameplay, but portrayed the game’s themes via a cinematic trailer. We were later treated to a gameplay trailer by the game’s publisher Square Enix. Hitman will be available from 8th December 2015, pre-order for the PS4 to get exclusive Beta access.
Next up for PlayStation E3 was Street Fighter V, revealing just some of the characters (Cammy and Birdie) that you can battle with in this adrenaline fuelled fight fest. Coming first to Playstation gamers with beta starting July 23rd 2015.
Next we were shown an update on No Man’s Sky, which was announced at the last E3. Some brief live gameplay by a developer reinforced the sheer, unimaginable scale of this universe sized project which equally made us fear that this epic space exploration game couldn’t possibly get finished! Though with a crack team of indie developers from Hello Games on the case we remain hopeful for now, as it’s clearly still in production and looking magnificent. No confirmed release date just yet, only the word ‘soon’ to go on.
Following on from No Man’s Sky we heard from one of the ingenious minds at Media Molecule. the studio that made Little Big Planet. Dreams is a project 4 years in the making and it’s perplexing and beautiful. After being told ‘you can create anything you can dream of’ in the game, we weren’t entirely sure we understood what we were looking at (especially at 2:38am in the morning…) but we’re keen to learn more soon. Dreams is set to challenge the very nature of how we create, in a space where you can go to explore and play the dreams of others and create and share your own. Dreams is an open-ended adventure – where players surf an ever-evolving collage of games, film, animation, music, and whatever we all imagine. We don’t know much about mystery exploration game Firewatch just yet, but we know that your only emotional lifeline within the game is the person on the other end of a handheld radio that your player carries. When something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the world, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making interpersonal choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.
In a follow up to one of the biggest games of 2014/15 Destiny: The Taken King is set to come out in September this year and make the franchise even bigger. (It will also include the original Destiny game and expansion packs 1 and 2 to appeal to huge fans and newcomers alike.) Experience the next great adventure in Destiny with tonnes of new gear, a new multiplayer map, co-op Strike and some PlayStation exclusive content. Out in September 2015.
We’d already witnessed a new cinematic trailer for this game from Ubisoft but PlayStation gave us more of a glimpse into the second playable protaganist in the new Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate; Jacob’s twin sister Evie Frye. She is a true master of stealth, armed with even more badass weaponry than her brother. Though both Evie and Jacob are interchangably playable we were also informed that there will be exclusive quests on PS4 which will allow you to play completely as the character of your choice.
It’s not going to be big news for everyone but Final Fantasy fans have been waiting for the following announcement for what feels like forever, dragged out even longer by Square Enix trolling us back in December with this this announcement. Final Fantasy VII Remade for the PS4 – it’s coming! We don’t know when, or how, or anything more than the trailer shows but it was, if nothing else, my personal highlight of this year’s E3 conference. Watch the trailer below.
With Xbox’s HoloLens announcement earlier in the night, PlayStation’s Project Morpheus update was inevitable but still exciting to hear about. The virtual reality headset can be used alongside friends using their normal Dualshock controllers, so you’re not isolated in your virtual world. Project Morpheus is also set to be compatible with plenty of PS4 games in the future to ensure that PlayStation’s vast audience want in on the action.
Star Wars Battlefront isn’t exclusive to PlayStation 4 but we were never going to turn down the chance to see more gameplay footage, especially of a different planet.
PlayStation’s grand finale was the highly anticipated Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End gameplay reveal involving an impossibly high speed car chase which gave us an insight into the kind of world the game will be set in. Several years after his last adventure, retired fortune hunter, Nathan Drake, is forced back into the world of thieves. With the stakes much more personal, Drake embarks on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. His greatest adventure will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.
