Kraven The Hunter: Everything We Know About The Marvel Movie

We’re another step closer to the arrival of the Sinister Six.

In January 2023, we will be introduced to Kraven The Hunter on the big screen. As Sony continues to build its own cinematic universe around famous Spider-Man villains, big game hunter Sergei Kravinoff is next in line for his own solo movie.

For those unfamiliar with this founding member of the Sinister Six, Kravinoff is a man whose lifelong mission was to prove himself as the greatest hunter alive by capturing Spider-Man.

Marvel Comics

He has a few superhuman abilities thanks to drinking a potion made of various jungle herbs; he will remain uninjured when facing forces that could kill any other human and doesn’t age – in the comics, he’s currently 70 but still looks 30.

On top of that, he’s an Olympic athlete and is skilled in the art of hand-to-hand combat. So, that’s all we need to know about the character – what do we know about his movie so far?

Who’s In Kraven The Hunter?

Marvel Comics

Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be stepping into the titular role and, so far, is the only member of the stacked cast whose role has been officially disclosed by Sony.

Joining the Kick-Ass star are Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Ariana DeBose, while Christopher Abbott will be playing the as-of-yet unnamed main villain.

Alessandro Nivola has been cast as a separate villain, while rising star Fred Hechinger also features further down the ensemble.

The film will be directed by J.C. Chandor, who previously made All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year, and Netflix heist movie Triple Frontier.

Character Rumours

The plot is being kept under lock and key before release, but the casting announcements were accompanied by some speculation as to what roles they would play.

The Hollywood Reporter announced Crowe’s appearance by highlighting he was rumoured to be playing Kraven’s father, a Russian aristocrat named Nikolai.

Deadline later reported that DeBose, in her first major role since West Side Story, would be playing Calypso, a Haitian voodoo priestess who is another key enemy of Spider-Man – and, more relevant to this film, a romantic partner to Kraven himself.

This has still yet to be confirmed, but we’ll take these sources at face value for now.

20th Century Pictures

And these weren’t the only unconfirmed character scoops Deadline reported. Abbott’s main villain is reportedly The Foreigner, a fan-favourite comics character.

For those unfamiliar, he’s a mercenary with a knack for martial arts. He crosses paths with Peter Parker more in the comics, so it will be interesting to see how he makes Kraven’s life hell – for one, The Foreigner interacts with Kraven’s brother more than him.

Speaking of which, Deadline have stated that Hechinger will be playing Kraven’s brother, Chameleon. As you’d suspect, his powers are his abilities to disguise himself as anybody.

Is There A Trailer?

Not yet as shooting only started in London in March 2022, with fans spotting Taylor-Johnson’s stunt double on set.

Excitingly, this tweet teases that this may be the first Marvel movie to feature a Greggs on-screen.

When Is The Kraven The Hunter Release Date?

The film is scheduled for release on 13th January 2023.
