Though the piecing together of the DC cinematic universe officially commenced with Batman Vs Superman earlier this year, everyone is talking about DC’s latest release Suicide Squad. DC have geared up a darker, grittier tale that blurs the lines between good and evil, Suicide Squad will have you cheering for the villains. Also known as Task Force X, the Suicide Squad is a team of supervillains who are recruited by a secret government agency to carry out dangerous black ops missions in exchange for shorter prison sentences. The Squad are kept under control once they’re out in the field with the threat of their micro-bomb implants. So, who exactly are they?
Harley Quinn / Dr Harleen F. Quinzel (Margot Robbie)
Harley Quinn, though relatively new to the DC world (first appearing in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992) is an absolute fan favourite and finally making her live-action film debut. Originally a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, Dr. Harleen Quinzel was corrupted by The Joker and installed herself his girlfriend and partner.
Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman)
A former Special Forces operative with a strategic mind, exceptional hand to hand combat skills but he can often be emotionally unstable. In the comics Rick Flag was initially reluctant to work with criminals but has led several iterations of the Suicide Squad over the decades out of a sense of duty and patriotism.
Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney)
Played by a low-budget Tom Hardy…this aggressive Australian has an attitude problem, he also has an art for throwing things at super-speed….
Floyd Lawton/Deadshot (Will Smith)
Deadshot is a cold blooded assassin and one of the most notorious marksmen in the DC Universe; claiming to never miss his target. Deadshot has a deathwish, and his outstanding shooting skills, further enhanced by his cybernetic eye-piece, will be key for missions. He has a strong sense of loyalty and is keen to keep his family safe, likely due to his having accidentally shot his beloved brother as a child.
Enchantress: (Cara Delevingne)
When the word ‘Enchantress’ is whispered, this member transforms into her mystical alter-ego. She is extremely powerful and mentally unstable, which leads to her joining the Suicide Squad to keep her evil side in check.
Waylon Jones / Killer Croc: (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)
One of Batman’s well known nemeses with aspirations to become a King amongst criminals in Gotham. Killer Croc’s reptilian appearance is a manifestation of his atavism, exacerbated by genetic experimentation. As a result of this it is not surprising that Killer Croc hates ‘normal’ people. His skin functions like armour and he has several special abilities including regenerative powers and superhuman strength, speed, and senses; though his animalistic mentality results in lower intelligence.
Chato Santana/ El Diablo (Jay Hernandez)
Santana is a gangster with pyrokinetic powers. In the more recent New 52 comics Santana joins the Suicide Squad after handing himself in for an arson attack where he accidentally kills innocent women and children.
Christopher Weiss / Slipknot (Adam Beach)
Surprise surprise, Slipknot is pretty damn good with ropes. A trained assassin responsible for chemically developing the formula for the durable ropes he goes on to use to kill. With his very particular set of skills let’s hope, for his sake, that he doesn’t come across enemies that don’t need air to survive.
Tatsu Yamashiro / Katana: (Karen Fukuhara)
Previously a member of the Justice League, we’re curious to see what has turned Katana to the Suicide Squad in the DC cinematic universe. Katana is a Japanese woman who trains as a samurai and becomes a vigilante after her husband and children are killed by her brother-in-law who happens to be a member of the Yakuza. She wields a cursed and powerful sword named Soultaker, which captures the spirits of the people it kills.
