Zavvi’s Best Films Of The Decade: Avengers: Endgame

Picking just one movie to call the ‘film of the decade’ is certainly a tough challenge, so when deciding on my recommendation I picked one that captivated me, one that emoted a reaction, one that pulled at my heartstrings, and most importantly, one that made me want to watch it again and again!

That movie for me was none other than Avengers: Endgame.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has had a huge impact on the industry and pop culture since its creation in 2008.

Marvel Studios

Starting with Iron Man in 2008, the likes of Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk and the Guardians Of The Galaxy have become household names in cinema.

With the release of 23 films in total, and many more in the pipeline, Marvel have really laid the foundations for how to produce superhero movies.

And in unsurprising news, this has led to the MCU becoming the highest grossing film franchise of all time, grossing over $22.5 billion globally.

Which leads us on nicely to Avengers: Endgame.

Endgame certainly had a tough act to follow, and it delivered in every element to become the highest grossing movie of all time.

But does highest grossing movie mean that it is automatically film of the decade? No it doesn’t, but here is why it is.

Marvel Studios

With a star studded A-list cast of MCU heroes, directors the Russo Brothers were able to shine a spotlight on each one, not leaving any character with an inferior moment or story.

It took full advantage of the structure of the MCU, helping tell individual characters’ stories, sprinkling Easter eggs throughout as nods to the fan base.

In typical Marvel fashion we also got a magical Stan Lee cameo which definitely left some teary eyes in the cinema.

Marvel Studios

The story is a classic good versus evil tale, but done about as well as it could be.

With Infinity War the Russos did such a good job making Thanos a hated figure, that everyone watching Endgame wanted to see him get his comeuppance.

That hatred paired with such a strong support for the heroes made this a match made in heaven, and one that you were just desperate to see play out.

The fight was no normal battle though, being the climax of years of torture which Thanos and his cronies have inflicted on our beloved Avengers.

There aren’t many moments in cinema that have had the hair on my arms sticking up, but this one did, and will stick with me for a long time.

The film had built to this epic moment, and you sensed that something incredible was about to take place., and it did not fail to deliver as the earth’s mightiest heroes put everything on the line in an effort to save the world.

Marvel Studios

Battle scene aside, Endgame is full of incredible scenes and performances from its amazing cast.

We got to see another side to Bruce Banner, and the battle he faces in bringing out The Hulk. Thor was able to bring himself from the brink of depression to lead the Avengers to battle.

The women of Marvel proved that the MCU is in more than capable hands with them at the helm. Hell, we even got to see an emotional side to Thanos!

Marvel Studios

Endgame is certainly guilty at pulling on your heartstrings and it takes you on an emotional rollercoaster featuring the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows.

I would be surprised if you didn’t find yourself getting choked up at any time throughout this epic three hour movie.

But it is not all doom and gloom, as in true comicbook style there is a sufficient sprinkling of some much needed comedy.

Marvel Studios

With the weight of the franchise on its shoulders, Endgame really was the perfect climax to an incredibly well built story that has spanned over ten years.

Having made us invest in these characters and share their stories throughout their individual movies, Marvel created the perfect crossover event which had us invested for the duration of the 181 minute masterpiece.

The sheer size of this blockbuster, with its huge budget and A-list cast makes the Russo Brothers’ film a spectacle.

This movie will make you laugh. It will probably make you cry. You will love it 3000, and you will hope that it isn’t the last time that you get to see the Avengers assemble!
