Luther Creator Teases Potential Sequel And Alice Morgan’s Return

The following article contains spoilers for Luther: The Fallen Sun.

Luther might be back on another case very soon…

Neil Cross, creator and writer of the hit BBC crime series, and Jamie Payne, director of Netflix movie adaptation Luther: The Fallen Sun, told Zavvi in a recent interview that the new film very deliberately leaves the door open for the return of Idris Elba’s disgraced detective.

Cross said: “We always tell complete stories – but there’s also always a crooked finger leaving the door open, warning John Luther that something could be waiting for him.

“We’d love to explore new worlds and territories that he could move to next.

“I don’t yet know what his return will look like, but there is one thing I can guarantee you right now, on the record: that return is not going to be a light-hearted musical comedy.”

Netflix

Payne added: “I think it’s great that for once in a Luther story, we don’t see people close to him that we love lose their lives in his pursuit of justice.

“I love that he pushes himself to find the villain and what he does to pursue that is quite incredible.

“He unites the family but the truth is, he’s now going on a quest alone. I can’t call it a redemption arc as that feels too much like a conclusion.”

Netflix

So, with Luther ending The Fallen Sun as a hero cop for once, what could compromise a redemption arc? Cross teased that this could be the return of a beloved villain from the BBC series.

He added: “The universe and the history of this show and the characters is very rich, it exists permanently in both of mine and Jamie’s heads. And Alice is a character who is always there, and I’d love for us to meet her again”.

Could this signal a return for Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan?

Netflix

Whilst the majority of the characters from the TV series don’t appear here, season five did appear to leave the door open for her return, as Alice’s body disappeared after seemingly plummeting to her death – did she fake it once again, like in season four?

The actress has remained tight-lipped in the years since her last episode premiered in 2019, telling Entertainment Weekly: “Well, I wouldn’t like to say [if she’s dead]. I don’t know how someone could survive that fall, so that’s my thought. But then you don’t see the body. So, I don’t know.”

Is this wishful thinking on our part? Either way, we hope to see more Luther on our screens very soon.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is streaming on Netflix from 10th March.
