Marvel Announce New MCU Projects: Everything Revealed

Yesterday’s Disney Investor Day (10th December) brought with it a bumper presentation from the company’s various studios announcing their plans for the next few years.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took to the stage to give updates on upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, show us some teaser footage and reveal an already highly anticipated new movie.

Here is everything that Marvel revealed.

Fantastic Four

Marvel Studios

With Disney’s acquisition of Fox, we all knew it would only be a matter of time until a Fantastic Four movie was announced and finally, last night, Feige confirmed it is officially in development.

MCU veteran Jon Watts, who helmed both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, will direct the project currently titled Fantastic Four.

Whilst there are no other details at the moment, we do have our theories on what to expect from the film…

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania

Marvel Studios

The third Ant-Man film has a title and we have to admit, it is rather fabulous – Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania.

Alongside the returning cast of Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne/Wasp), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), and Michelle Pfeiffer (Janet Van Dyne), Feige confirmed the reports that Jonathan Majors will star as the villainous Kang The Conqueror.

Meanwhile Kathryn Newton also joins the cast as Lang’s daughter Cassie.

Thor: Love And Thunder

Marvel Studios

Following reports that Christian Bale had been cast in the upcoming film Thor: Love And Thunder from director Taika Waititi, Feige confirmed he will be playing the role of Gorr The God Butcher, a villain from the comics who vowed to kill every god he could get his hands on.

We also now know that the film is due to hit cinemas 6th May 2022.

Secret Invasion

Marvel Studios

A new Disney+ show is on its way which will see the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos.

Little is known about the show but we do know it will see the duo deal with a Skrull invasion on Earth.

Ironheart

Marvel Studios

Ironheart was another Disney+ show that was announced during the showcase, with Dominique Thorne being revealed as playing genius inventor Riri Williams – a young girl from inner city Chicago who reverse engineers Tony Stark’s armuor to become the protector of her neighbourhood.

Marvel Studios described the show as “an original series about the creator of the most advanced suit of armour since Iron Man”.

Armor Wars

Marvel Studios

The announcements just kept coming when it came to new MCU Disney+ shows, with Feige revealing the Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes a.k.a. War Machine will return in original series Armor Wars.

The show will ask the question what happens if Stark’s tech fell into the wrong hands?

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special

Marvel Studios

That’s right – we are getting our first MCU Christmas special with Guardians Of The Galaxy writer/director James Gunn helming a holiday special which will shoot during production of the upcoming third film.

It will hit Disney+ in 2022, during the festive season of course.

I Am Groot

Marvel Studios

And we have more good news for Guardians Of The Galaxy fans as fan-favourite Baby Groot is getting his own series on Disney+.

Titled I Am Groot (what else was it going to be called), this series of short films will star the adorable Groot alongside new and unusual characters from the Marvel universe.

Ms. Marvel

Upcoming Disney+ show Ms. Marvel was a focus for the studio during their presentation, treating us to a first look at the serious with behind-the-scenes interviews.

Feige also confirmed Iman Vellani will play the titular role, a.k.a. Kamala Khan, and that the series will hit the streaming service late next year.

Captain Marvel 2

Marvel Studios

Following on from this news, it was announced that Vellani’s character will appear in upcoming sequel Captain Marvel 2, alongside an adult version of Monica Rambeau, played by WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris.

This movie is currently scheduled to fly into cinemas on 11th November 2022.

Hawkeye

Jeremy Renner/Instagram

Recently it was reported that Hailee Steinfeld will star as Kate Bishop in upcoming Disney+ show Hawkeye, with Marvel Studios confirming the news last night.

They gave us a very short glimpse at Steinfeld as Bishop, also stating that Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee and newcomer Alaqua Cox had also joined the cast.

The series which will see the return of Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye will have episodes directed by Rhys Thomas and duo Bert and Bertie.

She-Hulk

Marvel Studios

During the presentation we got confirmation from Marvel Studios that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk will be appearing in the upcoming Disney+ show She-Hulk, with Tim Roth returning as the villainous Abomination from early MCU film The Incredible Hulk.

Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany will play the title role of She-Hulk, also known as Jennifer Walters.

Loki

We have just one word for you to sum up the first trailer for Disney+ show Loki which dropped last night: glorious.

The God Of Mischief is back as Tom Hiddleston’s cheekily charming Loki is getting his own show.

You may recall that in Avengers: Endgame we saw Loki escape with the Tesseract during a visit back in time to the Battle Of New York. Well this new series will follow this runaway version of Loki who has not gone through the redemptive arc he followed in the original MCU timeline.

Expect plenty of shenanigans and Owen Wilson, Richard E. Grant and Gugu Mbatha-Raw starring in currently unknown roles.

What If…?

Feige treated us to a trailer for the first MCU animated show which is coming soon to Disney+.

It will star Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher who narrates a look at Marvel’s history, delving deep into alternative possibilities and what could have been.

Many MCU actors will be reprising their roles including Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Hayley Atwell and Paul Rudd, making the voice cast for this show incredible.

Although we don’t know every story the series will tell, it has been confirmed we will get a look at what would have happened if Peggy Carter was the one who was injected with the Super Soldier Serum rather than Steve Rogers, and what is Loki wielded Mjolnir instead of Thor.

The Falcon And The Winter Solider

The first trailer for upcoming Disney+ show The Falcon And The Winter Soldier dropped during the showcase last night, providing us with a look at what the duo will get up to in the series.

The show will pick up with the duo following the events of Avengers: Endgame, so Falcon is in possession of Captain America’s shield, with his loyal teammate Bucky Barnes by his side.

Daniel Brühl’s villainous Zemo from Captain America: Civil War is also back for the series (this time wearing a purple mask as per the comics), as is Emily Van Camp’s former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter.

A release date of 19th March 2021 was also announced.

WandaVision

Ahead of the release of the first MCU Disney+ show WandaVision on 15th January next year, a new trailer was shared giving us another glimpse at what we can expect.

And yeah, things are going to get really, really weird!

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

Marvel Studios

Set to debut in cinemas 25th March 2022, it was revealed that Sam Raimi’s upcoming Doctor Strange film will be tied to both WandaVision and the next Spider-Man movie.

It was also confirmed that Xochitl Gomez has been cast as America Chavez in the movie, who in the comics goes by the superhero name of Miss America.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

Marvel Studios

Feige shared the news that production has just wrapped on the upcoming Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings film which will introduce a new hero to the MCU.

Directed by Short Term 12’s Destin Daniel Cretton, this film will feature Marvel’s very first Asian lead, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi.

It will hit cinemas 9th July 2021.

Black Panther 2

Marvel Studios

Last night Marvel Studios confirmed that the role of T’Challa in Black Panther will not be recast with a new actor following the sad death of Chadwick Boseman earlier this year.

Feige stated: “Boseman’s performance was iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past. And it’s for that reason that we will not recast the character.”

A sequel is still going ahead, with writer/director Ryan Coogler (who helmed the first movie) currently hard at work developing it.

The scheduled release date for the project is July 2022.

Black Widow

Marvel Studios

Despite industry shifts due to the pandemic, Feige confirmed that Black Widow will indeed not be going to Disney+, remaining a cinema exclusive.

The delayed movie is now scheduled to be released in cinemas on 7th May 2021.
