Nostalgia is a major reason why many of us play games. Whether we want to recapture those countless hours spent, so deep into the night, vigilantly trying to finish the games we loved when we were younger, or just feel like a quick play on an classic; there’s always space in a gamer’s heart for old games.
With the announcement that Grim Fandango, Tim Schafer’s neo-noir classic, is to be remastered for the PS4 and PlayStation Vita, here at Zavvi we thought we’d pencil in 5 more classics we’d like to be remastered for the new consoles for a new generation of gamers to love:
5. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Originally released on the Xbox in the July of 2003, KOTOR was a BAFTA game award winner. The Los Angeles Times considers it one of the most important works in the Star Wars universe. Alongside it’s 2005 sequel, Knights of the Old Republic is definitely deserving of a remastering for the Xbox One.
4. Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics is, without a doubt, one of the greatest console turn-based strategy games ever made. Though it got a PSP re-release in the shape of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, a console version of the original Playstation game – with an expanded online multiplayer – would be the icing on the cake.
3. Advance Wars
Another terrific series of turn-based strategies, Advance Wars, when released in 2001 spawned a whole generation of handheld strategy games. The last game in the series, Advance Wars: Dark Conflict, was released in 2008 on the Nintendo DS. Since then, however, there hasn’t been a new game in the series – a new one would be a perfect addition to the 3DS.
2. Red Dead Redemption
Consistently referred to as one of the greatest games on the last generation, Red Dead Redemption remains the true masterpiece of developers Rockstar. Immensely cinematic and drawing on the full resources of the PS3 and Xbox 360, it heralded the summit of those console’s power. In much the same was as The Last of Us is getting a remaster, so too should Read Dead Redemption.
1. Shadow of the Colossus
I’ll be totally honest with you. Shadow of the Colossus is my favourite game, full stop. A behemoth of a title that was filled with sadness, contemplation and frenzied awe, SotC set a new standard in the depth of artistic expression a videogame could fulfil. Whilst it did get a remaster for the PS3, those of us who skipped that generation of PlayStation but have since returned yearn to play it again. Hopefull it will be part of the PS4s new streaming service due this year.
